The Australia Log--Entry #2

9/30/04 7:00 PM – 11 PM

D&D Open Shadow Marches

Team: The Cobra Kais – Richard (Beld), Glenn (Corlin), Mark (Larric), Suraj (Reginald), Michelle (Sarlis), Rob (Tannix)

Overview: The party had a difficult time with the first encounter, nearly losing Sarlis to a paralysis/coup-de-gracecombo, and re-energizing a shambling mound with a lightning bolt. As Beld the monk, Richard had a tendency to charge in ahead of the rest of the party, which resulted in his being torn apart by a giant ape. After this unfortunate mishap, things went smoothly. The party's magic resisted the unpredictable effects of Xoriat, and between a good distribution of weaponry and Rob's gift for avoiding sunder attacks, the final encounter went off with no further loss of life.

The Cobras were operating on a slight handicap, in that I was still suffering from jet lag and lack of sleep. They were a fun group to play with, and if I ever go to a casino, I plan to have Rob make all my die rolls.

Highlight: When the shambling mound grappled Tannix, I thought that we'd be seeing pieces of warforged littering the swamp. Instead, despite being severely outmatched (+15 grapple for the shambler, +9 grapple for Tannix), Rob managed to pin the shambler and hold it immobile for three rounds! This series of amazing rolls allowed the rest of the Cobras to regroup and gang up on the shambler, eventually reducing it to coleslaw.
