Marches
Team: The Ones
for Fun – Starrin (Beld), Luke (Corlin), Jason (Larric), Neil
(Reginald), Nat (Sarlis), Jodi (Tannix)
Overview:
Overall, the Ones for Fun had a stronger start on the opening encounter,
sticking together as a group and waiting for the shambler to close. As
Beld the Monk, Starrin had a long stand-off trying to hit a ghast, which
also managed to partially evade a lightning bolt; we concluded that the
ghast must have been the corpse of another monk, suggesting the movie
"Crouching Monk, Ninja Ghast." But although the group generally held
together, this didn't stop the shambler from killing Sarlis in its
initial attack. Nat accepted his fate with admirable patience, sitting
through the remaining three and a half hours and even fetching fish and
chips for the final battle.
The
second encounter went over without a hitch, and the party proceeded to
their goal. As Larric, Jason had a moment of remorse when they
determined the nature of the seal, and briefly lobbied for the party to
abandon adventuring and become Gatekeeper druids. Of course, this would
have prevented the group from advancing in the open, so they eventually
went forward with their original plan. However, an interesting placement
of characters presented a completely different tactical scenario. The
group had a great deal of trouble with an enemy archer, who seemed
determined to turn Larric into a pincushion. The final encounter proved
to be even more difficult; the group had troubles with spellcasting and
managed to lose the weapons that could most effectively penetrate the
damage reduction of the major enemy. Ultimately Tannix and Larric gave
their lives so the others might escape… at least, Tannix gave her life
so the others might escape, and Larric gave his life because hey, all
the cool kids were doing it.
While luck was often against them, the Ones for Fun faced adversity with
good cheer and made excellent tactical decisions (I now hate ray of
enfeeblement). Special thanks to Nat for his good sportsmanship
regarding his early death!
Highlight: As
Reginald, Neil managed to conjure a 50-foot pit beneath himself and
Larric in the middle of battle. Luckily, he had feather fall. Jason's
question: "Can I shoot him as I'm falling?"
