The Australia Log--Entry #7

10/02/04 7:00 PM

Open #3: Sharn

Team: The Iron Talons – David (Corlin), Gavin (Reginald), Robert (Larric), Adam (Tannix), Andrew (Beld), Stephen (Sarlis)

Overview: Three teams made the final round: The Ones for Fun (DM’d by James), the Cobra Kais (DM’d by Anestis), and the Iron Talons, who had the misfortune to end up with me. As before, the Iron Talons showed themselves to be excellent players with a firm grasp of both rules and tactics. However, they suffered a critical loss when Reginald the sorcerer was snatched by a salamander and pulled into lava; surprisingly the 7th-level sorcerer didn’t survive the 70 points of fire damage (OK, that’s not even a little surprising. Sue me.). A second character was almost pulled into the lava, only surviving because of the timely use of action points. In the next encounter, Beld and Sarlis chose to run ahead to look for the bad guys while the rest of the party dealt with the goon squad. But the death of Reggie meant no haste, which meant that the group spent a long time apart. Beld and Sarlis disrupted the ritual, and Beld disarmed the villain and stole the all-important Khyber-shard staff. But their foes were protected by stoneskin and proved almost impossible to hurt – and in the end, Sarlis was killed by the enemy swordsman. Still, with the fire resistance spells that the party had active, the fire-wielding villains were at a serious disadvantage, and once the remaining party members joined Beld the course was clear. The swordsman fled to Fernia, and the party defeated the wizard and his evil scheme. Sharn was saved!

Highlight: While it’s not exactly a highlight, Stephen certainly deserves some recognition for having a perfect streak – dying in each round of the open! He certainly could have survived this round if he’d chosen to play it safe, but he was determined to stop the villain’s vile plan, and he gave his life to do so. All citizens of Sharn owe this brave soul a debt of gratitude. In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to buy him a spare headstone – given his streak of deaths, he’ll certainly need it!
